MaxAx fault codes and LED diagnostics
The Control Techniques MaxAx servo drive reports faults through the LEDs on its front panel and through the monitoring outputs on the signal connector, rather than with numerical trip codes. Everything below is taken from the Diagnostics and Fault finding sections of the MaxAx User Guide. Overvoltage, undervoltage and over-temperature clear themselves when the cause goes away; a resolver break or a short between connector pins needs the power removed for at least 10 seconds.
MaxAx fault indications
What each front panel LED and each monitoring output means, and what the drive does about it. The I²t LEDs indicate current limiting rather than a trip, so the drive keeps running.
| Indication | Fault | Meaning and reset |
|---|---|---|
| Front panel LEDs | ||
| Green | Drive normal | Lit while the drive is functioning correctly. When it is out, at least one fault is detected |
| Red | Resolver break | Fault in the resolver circuit: resolver break, a short circuit in the connection wiring, a wrong connection or no excitation signal. Remove and re-apply the power to reset |
| Red | Heatsink over-temperature | Excessive heatsink temperature (limit 95 °C at the heatsink). No reset action is required, the fault clears when the heatsink has cooled |
| Red | Motor over-temperature | Excessive motor temperature. No reset action is required, the fault clears when the motor has cooled |
| Red | High Irms | I²t current limiting rather than a trip: the drive is delivering the nominal current set by the SW2 switches and the green LED stays lit. Caused by a high duty cycle with frequent acceleration, frequent direction reversal, or an undersized drive |
| Yellow | Clamp active | Lit while the braking resistor is in use |
| Remote monitoring outputs | ||
| Contacts | Drive normal | Pins 9 and 10 of the signal connector are internally connected while the green LED is lit, and open when a fault is detected, so they can operate a remote control power switch |
| Open collector | I²t limiting | Normally conducting (logic 0) and open circuit while the drive is in I²t limiting |
If the green LED stays out, check the supply voltage is in range, look for a short circuit between connector pins, check the wiring of the output connector and check the braking resistor has not overheated. If the LED only goes out when the drive is enabled, check that no motor cable wire is grounded.
